YNR main line timetable reconstruction completed, transfer waiting time at eight hubs shortened on average

Yellow National Railway incorporates the transfer and connection of cross-regional trains and intercity trains into a unified system. The average transfer waiting time of the eight major hub stations has been significantly reduced compared with before the reconstruction, and the night maintenance window is guaranteed at the same time.

Yellow National Railway (YNR) announced today that the fourteen-month main line timetable reconstruction work has been completed and the new timetable will take effect across the entire network from this month. The core of the reconstruction is to integrate the transfer and connection of cross-regional long-distance trains and intercity trains into a unified system, changing the previous practice of separately arranging trains and passively forming transfer times for the two types of trains.

According to data released by YNR, the average transfer waiting time at eight major hub stations has dropped significantly compared with before the restructuring, with three hubs seeing a drop of more than one-third. At the same time, the departure and arrival punctuality rates of long-distance trains have both improved slightly.

Three-party game on a road network

On a shared physical road network, the three types of trains, namely long-distance passenger transport, intercity passenger transport and freight transport, have conflicting demands on line capacity: long-distance trains require continuous high-speed passing windows, intercity trains require high-frequency stop density, and freight trains require long-term occupation of low-speed channels. The three are superimposed on the limited line capacity, and optimization of any one may squeeze the other two.

The capacity allocation principle adopted by YNR in this reconstruction is "confidentiality during peak passenger traffic, ensuring freight channels during off-peak hours, and maintaining windows at night." The Operations Department explained that this means that during morning and evening peak hours, the departure density of intercity trains is guaranteed first; during off-peak hours, freight trains have a continuous running channel and are no longer cut off by scattered inserted passenger cars; at night, a complete maintenance operation window is retained and will not be compressed by the addition of night passenger cars.

「A timetable is not a timetable, but an allocation plan for the scarce resource of line capacity. It's much cheaper to line it up than to repair an extra section of line.」
— Licht Müller YNR 首席规划运营官、城际客运及货运部长

The maintenance window is not occupied

An arrangement in the reconstruction that is not easily noticed by passengers but is crucial to long-term operation is the solidification of the night maintenance window. YNR stated that the maintenance operations of tracks, signals and station facilities require continuous skylight time. If it is cut into several short periods due to the addition of trains, the efficiency and quality of the operations will be significantly reduced, which will accumulate into safety hazards in the long term.

In conjunction with the timetable reconstruction, YNR synchronously changed the maintenance cycles of signals and vehicles from calendar dates to calculations based on operating mileage, allowing maintenance resources to be invested in truly high-load sections and train groups.

YNR reminds that the train numbers and stop plans of some trains have been adjusted after the new timetable takes effect. Passengers can check the latest information through station announcements and official channels.
